The Barnyard School of Mansfield

Curriculum Goals

Curriculum is defined as everything staff does with children. A well-balanced curriculum supports the development of all children socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually. The curriculum is designed for active involvement by children in the learning process, recognizing that young children learn through play, active manipulation of the environment, concrete experiences and communicating with peers and adults.

The curriculum will provide a variety of activities and materials to encourage behaviors appropriate to each child's age, background, stage of development and individual needs, including adaptations for children with disabilities.

Some examples:

  • Areas are provided to accommodate and encourage activities such as block building, dramatic play, art, music, science, technology, mathematics, book reading, writing, manipulative woodworking and sensory play (e.g., sand, water, tactile activities)
  • Time and space are available for physical skill development and gross motor activities.
  • Areas are available for quiet play.
  • Daily routines are flexible but predictable.
  • Educational goals are promoted through daily teacher directed activities with focus on literacy, problem solving, critical thinking, communication, multiculturalism, social skills within a meaningful context for the child, self-expression through art and music, mathematical and scientific concepts, etc.

Opportunities for children to practice self-help skills are encouraged for independence and self-esteem building.
